DiMare Pastry Shop is staying put in Riverside after all

GREENWICH — In March, pastry lovers will not have to go far to find the new location of DiMare Pastry Shop. The beloved bakery will remain in Riverside Commons, but the entrance will be just around on the side.

The first change came Monday at the pastry shop, which has been an institution in town for 42 years, as the owners shut down the on-site kitchen in the back. They will continue to sells goodies from the storefront until the end of February, when the shop will move to that space in the back.

“This is very exciting,” shop owner Sabrina DiMare said Monday morning. “Today is a bit of a tough day for me, and I’m a little emotional because it’s our last day working as we are now with all the ovens in the back. All weekend I was a little sad.

“But now we know we’re not leaving, and it makes it a lot better,” said DiMare, who took over the shop with her sister Maria from their parents, Ugo and Bice. “If we were leaving I would be bawling right now, so it makes me happy that we will be in the back.”

In November, customers were shocked to see a “FOR LEASE” sign in the shop window. And the owners announced they would be leaving their longtime location on the Post Road right off Exit 5 of Interstate 95. They also announced that all the baking would be moved to their Stamford location.

But on Monday, DiMare said she was relieved to be staying at Riverside Commons.

“It’s great they’re going to be around,” Greenwich resident Ed Iuteri said. “They’re an institution. I think it’s important to have that in the Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside area. We need places like this.”

For customers, finding the new location will be easy. A new tenant, which has not yet been announced, will takeover the storefront. But there will be a new entrance along the side of the building, between the CVS and the current location.

DiMare said the new location — just a stroll down the walkway — will be easily visible. Another advantage: the new shop will be fully ADA accessible. Parking is also available in the back of the commons.

The new space will be a bit smaller — about 750 square feet — but DiMare said there’s enough space to serve the full menu, sell toys and gifts, and offer space for customers to sit and enjoy coffee and a pastry.

The storefront must be ready for the new tenant on March 1. DiMare is hoping for a smooth transition into the new space, but the shop might be closed for a week during the move.

“We hope it will be seamless, but it may not be,” DiMare said. “There’s a lot of moving parts. We’re hoping we’ll be open before St. Joseph’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day, which are two big bakery holidays. That’s a lot of Irish soda bread. We’ll be here until Feb. 24 or 25, and everyone will be working in the back as we do it.”

As the work begins to transform the back kitchen into the new storefront, DiMare said everyone is excited about the new space with its new showcases.

DiMare will continue to operate its location at 12 Largo Drive South in Stamford, where all the baking will now be done. The shop will still carry the same cakes, pastries, pies, cookies and other items, including the famous cannoli nachos. They will be brought to Riverside daily.

Loyal customers, some of whom have been coming to the shop for decades, are excited that the shop will remain in Riverside.

“It’s heartwarming to know that people really care about us and this shop,” DiMare said. “It’s important to have mom-and-pop stores here in this neighborhood. ... People want (to shop at) family-owned businesses.”

Stamford resident Melanie Early said the Riverside location is convenient for her and she’s happy to hear they’ll be staying.

“I’ll still be here, this will still be my location,” Early said. “I just love the bakery. It’s great to have a real neighborhood bakery here.”

In 1962 Ugo, Bice, and Maria Letizia DiMare came from Minturno, Italy on the Christopher Columbus. Ugo came to America with his family in search of his American dream of making a better life for his family. Ugo brought not only his family with him but his skills and love of baking.

Ugo began his American baking career at Egidio Pastry Shop on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx soon after arriving to America. Over the next 14 years he not only worked at various pastry shops across the New York area, he also expanded his family in 1965 by welcoming a brand new baby girl named Sabrina.

With his love of baking and wanting more for his family he finally was able to open DiMare Pastry Shop in Riverside, CT on May 8, 1976 with the help of his wife Bice and his two daughters. Ugo always welcomed the help from his two daughters and all though he loved the hard work and excitement of baking he did not want his daughters to work as hard as he was working.

Maria and Sabrina both went to College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York. Maria graduated in 1979 with a degree in languages and Secondary Education, and went on to Manhattan College where she graduated with a degree in Counseling Psychology in 1982. Sabrina graduated in 1987 with a degree in Health Education.

In 1982 Maria started her family with a daughter named Gabriella and her family grew with a son Timothy in 1983, and a daughter named Brittany in 1985. Maria's family has since grown to include six grandchildren Sofia, Siena, Gianna, Lorenzo, Kinsley and Arianna.

Shortly after Maria's family was complete, Sabrina also started her own family by welcoming a son named Nicholas in 1989, and identical twin boys named Matthew and Michael in 1991. Sabrina has three grandchildren Emma, Stella, Nico and a grandson on the way.

After welcoming all these great joys Maria and Sabrina came to realize the love they had for their family and the bakery and both of them joined the bakery full time.
Once Maria and Sabrina became totally involved in the bakery and their love of the business started to grow, Ugo, Bice, and the girls decided to expand the business and opened up DiMare Pastry Shop and Café in Stamford, CT on March 3, 1997.

Over the years the business keeps growing and the love of baking continues. Brittany has now joined the business full time and have worked with the family in bringing new and creative ideas to the bakery. Ugo, Bice, Maria, Sabrina and the rest of the DiMare family continue to come to work everyday with a deeper love and enjoyment of the bakery business and always love the share the joy with everyone who surrounds them.

We stand by our products. We use the best ingredients and bake in small batches to ensure the highest quality. If you are not satisfied with our product for any reason, please notify us within 24 hours. We would like the product to be returned so that we can look at the product and see where the problem took place. When the item is returned a store credit will be granted.
